Priorities Make Goals Happen

I read a blog called lifehacker.com. They review tech issues for business and life issues for business people. it is quite popular. A recent article was entitled How Priorities Make Things Happen. It is also the name of a new book and the article was written by the author, Scott Berkun.

I recommend you read the article and really digest what Scott Berkun is communicating. If you are going to do something it has got to be a top or number 1 priority. You might call this passion. If you don’t have passion to begin with, use discipline. If you don’t have enough of that, I will lend you some of mine.

SMARRT Goals

Filed under: Goals — Tags: — Bruce @ 7:09 pm

SMARRT stands for:

S - specific What is it in detail that you want to do? Do you want to “lose weight” or do you want to lose 10% of your body weight as fat

M - Measurable How much do you weigh? That can be measured. How much is 10% of your body weight? That can be measured. I want to lose weight can not be measured.

A - Attainable or Achievable - Is it possible? If you want to lose 100 pounds in 6 weeks - that is not attainable. Even if you were dead you couldn’t lose 100 pounds in 6 weeks. 10% of your body weight in 6 months, that can be done.

R - Realistic Can you do it? If you plan to run 3 miles a day to burn excess calories and you have not even walked a mile in months, that is not realistic. You could walk 1000 steps more each day maybe or at least 500 if you are in good health. Plan in gradual increments what ever yo plan to do. Don’t try to do it all at once.

R2 - Rewarded NOT WITH FOOD! Go to a movie, buy something you can afford, do something you like but give yourself a reward for achievement. Not because “you deserve it” but because of what you did in a finite period of time. If you lost 2 pounds a week for the last 3 weeks, then pat yourself on the back and celebrate a little bit.

T - Timed Have a period of time in which you want to get so much done. Then do it. Plan how much per month, week, day and each portion of the day. Say you want to take a 10 minute walk, 3 times a day for the next 10 days. That is timed 10 minutes, 3 times a day and 10 days. You can track that on a graph and you can tell if you did it.

Practice setting some SMARRT goals - write a few out and lets talk about them. Do it here in the comments and lets discuss it. No criticism or sarcasm about the goals class. You can praise, or you can ask a question like - I don’t understand how that is measurable or specific etc… Draw the person’s attention to a deficiency but don’t criticize and do not tell anyone what to do. OK, lets see some goals in the comments. They do not have to be anything you would actually do, but show you have a grasp of this concept.
